Tips on Advocating
One of the best ways to prepare for Disability Advocacy Day is to learn about your legislators. Find out which committees they serve on and how they have voted on issues that matter to you. Helpful tools include South Carolina Legislative Scorecard, where you can look up bills and legislators, and Ballotpedia, which provides detailed voting records.
Once you’re informed, you’ll feel more confident advocating—not just during Disability Advocacy Day, but all year long. Reach out to your legislators on social media, send an email, or give them a call. Be sure to let them know you are a constituent in their district, and don’t be afraid to share your personal perspective.
Remember: lawmakers are our friends and neighbors. They often know a little about a lot of topics, so your voice helps them better understand disability issues. If you’re attending Disability Advocacy Day, consider inviting your legislator to join you—it’s a great way to build a stronger connection.
